Motherboards, Selma Selman with Hajrula Selman, Muhamed Selman und Meho Huskic, 2023
Motherboards is an installation and performance by artist Selma Selman, in collaboration with her family members Hajrula Selman, Muhamed Selman and Meho Huskic. During the hours-long performance at Temporary Gallery, on the day of the exhibition opening and consecutive days, they will dismantle “motherboards” (central boards of a computer or server), in order to extract gold from the seemingly worthless electronic waste. The performance considers what values and relations society attributes to people, labour, relations and material objects.Working together with a goldsmith, the extracted gold will finally be melted down and eventually made into earrings for the artist's mother.
Selma Selman (b. 1991 in Ružica, BIH) currently lives and works in Amsterdam. Recently she had exhibitions at: Documenta 15, Kassel (2022), Manifesta 14, Pristina (2022), Kunstraum Innsbruck, Innsbruck (2022), MO Museum Vilnius, Vilnius (2022), Kasseler Kunstverein Museum Fridericianum, Kassel (2021), National Gallery, Sarajevo (2021), Acb Gallery, Budapest (2021), SU Art Gallery, Syracuse, USA (2018) and many more. Selma Selman is the founder of the organization „Get The Heck To School”, which aims to empower Roma girls all around the world who face ostracization from society and poverty.
LIQUID DEPENDENCIES
Pop-up presentation by Yin Aiwen
Fri 3 February, 8—10 pm
Liquid Dependencies is a multiplayer role-playing game that explores the future of a decentralized care society. Its German version is co-created by Liquid Dependencies Theory (Yin Aiwen, Mengyang Zhao and Yiren Zhao) and Elli Kuruş. Starting from Shanghai, and roaming across Europe in the past two years, this is the first time the game will be presented in Cologne. In the opening, the initiator of the project Yin Aiwen will make a pop-up appearance with a sneak peek of the Liquid Dependencies experience. Join her for a conversation and find out what will happen in the coming months!
Yin Aiwen is a practicing designer, artist, theorist, strategist and project developer who uses writing, system design and time-based art to examine the social impact of planetary communication technologies. She advocates relationship-focused design as a strategy to redesign, re-engineer and reimagine the relationship between technology and society. Besides publishing and exhibiting internationally, she also works as a strategist and researcher for cultural institutions.
CARE PACKAGES
Culinary contribution by Paula Erstmann
Fri 3 February, from 7 pm onwards
Paula Erstmann is a food poet and social activist. Her performances, menus and food installations deal with the social context of food and its characteristics. These artworks are located at the interface between art and everyday life. They aim at alienating the familiar and making the foreign familiar. Paula’s culinary works open up sensual as well as social spaces, and break up distances in order to allow a space for dialogue. Above all, they encourage people to perceive food and its presentation as an aesthetic and resonant medium of communication, and to rethink its possibilities.
This time Paula will prepare gifts for the visitors of our opening containing tongue tattoos, k cookies and rings. Take them as tokens of our kinship and in return bring something to eat to the closing event of the exhibition on the 28th of April. On the day of the opening around 9 pm a warm meal will be served.
