Marl – a Ruhr city as an urban utopia? Inspired by the now legendary 1950s urban planning project in Marl, British artist Charlotte Moth’s new film "The story of a different thought" (2014) explores the secrets and shortcomings of an architectural Gesamtkunstwerk and the many stories entwined within this “modernism indebted” building complex by the Dutch architectural office Van den Broek and Bakema. The film is a collage of photographic, cinematic, archival and scientific materials that conjure associations with various documentary, artistic or poetic roots, interlinked with universal principles of “flotation and suspension”. The development of conversations with architect Rebecca Loewen of DIN projects in Winnipeg, Canada and Texan writer and poet Joshua Edwards form important tangents in the thinking process surrounding the discoveries and mysteries of Marl as a site.

Charlotte Moth (born 1978 in Carshalton, UK) lives and works in Paris. She is currently writing her PhD at Royal College of Art and teaching at Goldsmiths College, London. Moth has studied at Slade School of Art, London and was researcher in Fine Art at Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht. Her works have been shown among others at MAC/VAL Musée d’Art Contemporain du Val-de-Marne, European Kunsthalle at Kunsthaus Bregenz, Triennale Fellbach, Centre d'art contemporain, Geneva, Musée Départemental d’Art Contemporain, Rochechouart, Kunsthalle Basel, Halle für Kunst, Lüneburg, FormContent, London, Irish Museum of Modern Art. Die Kunstproduzenten, conceived by Regina Barunke, is a non-profit initiative by SK Stiftung Kultur founded in 2012 that examines and develops formats of art production in the field of electronic and digital media and offers them for the public discourse.
