In December 2008, the Temporary Gallery was founded initially under the name "Rental Gallery"—based on the model of a rental gallery—in the legal form of a registered association, initiated by gallery owners Christian Nagel and Thomas Rehbein and Art Cologne director Daniel Hug. The increasingly declining art market in Cologne at that time was to be strengthened by this additional exhibition space for international art galleries. In April 2009 the "Rental Gallery" moves into an industrial hall in the center of Cologne and starts its program. However, the model of a rental gallery does not prevail at the location in Cologne: its name changes to "Temporary Gallery", at the beginning of 2012 it ceases its operations as a rental gallery.
In September 2012, the Temporary Gallery reopens, now in its initial form as a charitable art association: exhibition, mediation and cooperation have since formed the cornerstones of its program. Its special focus lies on the intersection of contemporary artistic and curatorial practice and theory as well as their discourse and embedding in a wider art- and cultural-historical, scientific and social context. In 2013, the Temporary Gallery emerged as the winner of a public competition organized by the City of Cologne for a new "Center for contemporary art" and has since received institutional funding. In addition to solo and group exhibitions, lecture- and film series as well as cooperation with guest curators and universities, it also offers individual project consultations and events for artists and curators from Cologne. In 2018 the Temporary Gallery is awarded the ADKV-ART COLOGNE Prize.
The Rental Gallery was headed by Daniel Müller (2009) and Caroline Nathusius (2010-2011). From 2012-2018 Regina Barunke has been the artistic and managing director of the Temporary Gallery. Since 2019, Aneta Rostkowska is the director of Temporary Gallery.
